CONTRIBUTION OF UNC TOWARDS THE INDEPENDENCE OF UGANDA

UNC - stood for Uganda National Congress.

It was formed by Ignatius Musaazi, a former leader of the Farmers Union in Buganda.

It was formed at the time when Kabaka Mutesa was deposed and deported to Britain.

It was the most dynamic political party formed at the time. Some of its other leaders were Joseph Kiwanuka and Abu Mayanja.

It was mainly of the middle class people in Buganda. It pioneered national struggle for self rule in Uganda.

UNC increased greater African representation on the Legislative council.

It opposed the idea of East African federation which later failed.

It strongly worked for national unity in Uganda for self rule.

It pioneered nationalism in Uganda. It directed Uganda’s voice towards the need for self rule.

The UNC weaknesses were to be improved by the nationalists to complete the struggle of Uganda’s independence.

It opened up doors for other political parties in Uganda like DP, UPC, and others.

It was partly due to the UNC’s pressure that the Kabaka was released. This action won a lot of sympathy in Buganda for UNC.

Later, the UPC - KY alliance contributed to the independence of Uganda on 9th October 1962.
